Free NSN Lookup

Enter a 13-digit National Stock Number to see the item name, part numbers and CAGE codes recorded against it. Free, no account.

13 digits. Hyphens or spaces are optional, and leading zeroes are kept exactly as you enter them. Covers aviation supply classes only. Free, no account.

Results also show the NIIN and Federal Supply Class. Covers aviation supply classes from public DLA data. See what is covered.

The lookup needs JavaScript. Everything below is readable without it.

What this tool does

It answers one question: what does the public federal catalogue record against this stock number? You enter an NSN and get back the item name and each reference number filed against the item, with the CAGE code it is filed under.

The data is a stored copy of one public table from the Defense Logistics Agency, limited to 31 aviation supply classes: 1,022,978 reference rows covering 558,844 stock numbers. honest.aero is a private website and is not affiliated with DLA.

What an NSN is

A National Stock Number is a 13-digit number that identifies an item of supply. It identifies the item. It is not a statement that the item is in stock anywhere. It is written in four groups, 4-2-3-4:

The parts of NSN 1620-01-003-0911
Part of the numberMeaning
1620Federal Supply Class (FSC)What kind of item it is. 1620 is aircraft landing gear components.
01National Codification Bureau codeThe country that catalogued the item. 00 and 01 are the United States.
003-0911Item numberA serial assigned by that bureau. It has no meaning of its own.
01-003-0911NIINThe last nine digits together: the National Item Identification Number. It identifies the item even if its class is later reassigned.

Every digit counts, including leading zeroes. This tool keeps what you type as text and never converts it to a number. The structure above follows the Defense Logistics Agency’s own description of the NSN.

Type all 13 digits. Hyphens or spaces in the 4-2-3-4 positions are optional. The tool does not guess: a NIIN on its own, a part number, or separators in the wrong places are reported, not corrected. Three real stock numbers to try:

Example stock numbers from the loaded data
NSN to tryWhat you will see
1620-01-003-0911One referenceA single part number under a single CAGE code.
1680-01-003-3564Several referencesThe same part number recorded under three different CAGE codes. Three rows, and the tool does not pick one.
2840-00-210-6069A long listMore references than the tool lists. Results are paged and capped.

Examples were picked from the public data by fixed rules, such as the stock number with the most references. They are not recommendations and imply nothing about supply.

Reading a result

What each field in a result means
FieldWhat it is
NSN, NIIN, classThe number you entered, split into its parts, with the class title.
Item nameThe catalogue’s approved name for the item, such as PARTS KIT,LANDING GEAR,OVERHAUL.
Reference part numberA number recorded against the item, exactly as published. One row each. Some are national catalogue index numbers, not manufacturer part numbers; the tool shows every row and does not classify them.
CAGE codeThe five-character code of the organisation that reference is filed under.
Name on CAGE recordThe name the data prints beside that code. It is a register entry. It is not a statement of who manufactures the part or who may supply it.

What a match does not establish

  • Interchangeability. Several references on one stock number are separate catalogue records. Whether one may replace another is decided by the approved data for the aircraft.
  • The manufacturer or an approved source. A CAGE reference does not show who makes the part, that a registration is current, or that anyone is an approved source for a solicitation.
  • Stock or price. Nothing here says a part is available, what it costs or how long it takes.
  • Certification. A reference says nothing about release paperwork, trace or condition.
  • Eligibility to quote. A solicitation sets its own approved sources and requirements. Read the solicitation.

No result, outside coverage, or unavailable

These are three different answers and the tool names each one.

  • No reference found. The class is one we cover, the data was read, and it holds no reference row for that NIIN. The stock number may be newer than the snapshot, cancelled, recorded without a reference number, or left out of the public release because it is restricted or proprietary.
  • Outside coverage. The class is not one we load. This says nothing about the stock number itself.
  • Lookup unavailable. The data could not be read, so nothing was checked. It is never shown as “no result”.

In all three cases you can still ask us to source the item.

Requesting sourcing

When a lookup returns the item you need, select the reference you want and choose Request sourcing. The request carries the stock number and the exact reference you picked. You then add:

  • Quantity and unit. The unit matters: 5 in hundreds is 500 pieces. Units offered: each (EA), pair (PR), set (SE), kit (KT), assembly (AY), foot (FT), hundred (HD).
  • Acceptable conditions. NE New, NS New Surplus, FN Factory New, OH Overhauled, SV Serviceable, AR As Removed, RP Repairable. Leave them all unselected if you have no constraint.
  • Needed-by date, if you have one, and whether the aircraft is on ground.
  • Your name and email, so a person can reply.

Not sure which reference applies? Choose “I’m not sure which one I need” instead of picking one. We work from the NSN and confirm the exact part with you before sourcing anything. We do not choose an equivalent on your behalf.

A person reads every request and looks for current supply. No supplier is contacted at the moment you press send, and nothing is quoted automatically. For a list of parts, send one RFQ.

Data source and coverage

Where the data comes from and how current it is
SourceDefense Logistics Agency, PUB LOG, table P_PART_PICK. DLA describes PUB LOG as publicly releasable logistics information, free to download and updated monthly. It leaves out restricted and proprietary data, so some stock numbers are not in it at all.
Coverage31 aviation Federal Supply Classes, listed below. 1,022,978 reference rows, 558,844 stock numbers.
Snapshot taken. Each result also shows the date the data was loaded into this tool.
PUB LOG editionReported to us as OCT 2026. We have not verified this independently. It is the label our upstream copy carries for its load, taken on its word.
RefreshBy hand, when a newer edition is imported. DLA publishes monthly; this copy has no schedule and is not a live connection to DLA.
Fields loadedClass, NIIN, CAGE code, reference number, item name, name on the CAGE record. Not loaded: item characteristics, management data, prices, interchangeability and substitution data, the CAGE address file.

Classes were chosen from the government’s own classification by what each class is for. General hardware such as rivets, nuts, bolts, bearings, seals and electrical connectors is not covered, and neither is any non-aviation class; those return an “outside coverage” result. A stock number shows up to 200 references, 25 at a time.

Questions buyers ask

Yes. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on ordinary use. A technical limit stops automated bulk querying, and a person looking up stock numbers one at a time will not meet it.

No. This tool takes a full 13-digit NSN and nothing else. A 9-digit NIIN is not accepted on its own, because the tool will not guess the class in front of it. Part numbers and CAGE codes appear in results; they are not search inputs here. For a CAGE code, use the official CAGE search. For a part number we have published pricing on, use Find a part.

No. An NSN identifies an item of supply. A result shows what is recorded against that item; it says nothing about stock, price, lead time or whether anyone can deliver it today. To find out, send a sourcing request.

Not on that basis alone. A shared NSN means both numbers are recorded against one item of supply. It is a cataloguing fact. Whether one part may replace another on an aircraft is decided by the approved data for that aircraft.

Not necessarily. A CAGE code names the organisation a reference number is filed under. That can be a manufacturer, a design authority, a distributor, a government activity or a national codification bureau. It does not show that a registration is current, and it does not make that organisation an approved source for a solicitation.

The tool tells you which of three things happened. The class may be one we do not load. The class may be covered but the snapshot holds no reference row for that NIIN. Or the lookup could not run, in which case nothing was checked. None of the three means the stock number does not exist.

The snapshot was taken on 13 October 2026. It is a stored copy, not a live connection to DLA, and it is refreshed by hand when a newer PUB LOG edition is imported; there is no schedule. For anything contractual, confirm against the current government source.
